caring For those who care for our community
In our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, caring is a collaborative act with many people helping care for a single person. Because of this, people looking after family and friends often do not recognise themselves as carers.
Did you know that 12.4% of Indigenous Australians provide unpaid care and support to family and friends (1) compared with 10.5% of non-Indigenous Australians? (2) And this statistic would be even higher, if everyone caring for a loved one identified themselves as a carer.
If you look after a loved one with disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, frailty due to age, or alcohol and/or drug issues, then you are one of Australia’s 2.6 million carers. (Taken from NSW doc for demo purposes only)
